Phillip Haeck, MD, a partner at Plastic Surgery Associates of Seattle, was named president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), at Plastic Surgery 2010, the Society's annual scientific assembly. Dr. Haeck will lead the world's largest plastic surgery association and foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery for a one-year term. As ASPS president, Dr. Haeck will focus on patient safety, as well as, continuing member and public education.

A former police officer injured in the line of duty, a teenage girl with a craniofacial anomaly, a breast reconstruction patient, and a man injured by a drunk driver are being named honorees of the Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity awards by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) at Plastic Surgery 2010 in the Metro Toronto Convention Center on October 3. These unselfish individuals endured numerous reconstructive plastic surgeries and use their experiences, strength and determination to help others in need.

Although it's been a sluggish year for plastic surgery due to the economy, the long-term outlook is more encouraging. According to statistics released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 12.5 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2009, down 1 percent from 2008; up 69 percent since 2000. Nearly 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year.

A majority of Americans oppose the inclusion of a five percent tax on cosmetic medical procedures, according to a survey released today. Survey respondents oppose the cosmetic tax by a 52% - 43% margin.

Despite the increase of breast reconstruction procedures performed in 2008, nearly 70 percent of women who are eligible for the procedure are not informed of the reconstructive options available to them, according to a recently published report. Newly released statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows there were more than 79,000 breast reconstruction procedures performed in 2008 - a 39 percent increase over 2007.
